Motorcyclist hit by vehicle, driver flees then returns to pick up bumper before officers arrive

A motorcyclist was hit by a hit-and-run driver Tuesday afternoon according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Merced California Highway Patrol received several calls regarding a two-vehicle collision in the intersection of Beachwood Drive and Ashby Road at around 5:34 p.m.

Officers arrived and located 77-year-old Ralph Stevenson, an Atwater resident who was driving a Triumph motorcycle, Ralph had major injuries and was flown to Doctors Medical Hospital in Modesto.

CHP says Ralph was driving Westbound on Ashby Road approaching the intersection of Beachwood Drive when a driver of possibly a 1997-2001 white Honda Prelude was stopped at the posted stop sign and drove into the path of the motorcycle causing the collision.

The Motorcycle collided with the left front bumper of the Prelude causing Ralph to be ejected from the motorcycle. The prelude lost the front bumper at the scene and took off.

According to witnesses, the driver turned left on Ashby road and left the scene, the driver immediately returned to the scene and a passenger described as a heavy-set male adult with short-shaved hair exited the vehicle and picked up the bumper and left the scene a second time Northbound on Beachwood Drive.

No other injuries were reported, Ralph was not determined to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

This collision remains under investigation and the California Highway Patrol is looking for assistance with locating the driver and passenger of the Honda Prelude.
