About 14 properties were affected by fire in Merced

On July 16th, 2019, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the Merced Fire Department responded with several fire trucks to a large fire reported in the area of Ash Avenue and Dale Avenue.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed the fire spreading quickly due to high winds. Pg&e was called to respond immediately to shut off power and gas lines.

The fire spread up to fourteen homes, damaging fences, several dog kennel cages vehicles, and some property in the back of the homes.

Pg&e is reporting about 800 customers are affected by the shutdown of their electricity and gas services. The time expected for restoration is at approximately 8:30 p.m.

According to Franklin, Battalion Chief of the Merced City Fire Department no livable homes were destroyed.

One man who lives in the area tried to stop the fire before firefighters arrived, he received smoke inhalation and was checked by Riggs ambulance on scene.

Other neighbors reported seeing a man and a woman leaving the area before the fire spread.

The Merced Police Department is taking reports from several neighbors who may have witnessed the suspects.

No further injuries were reported, the fire remains under investigation.
