Merced County pregnant woman shot and killed, this is what police say

A pregnant woman from Gustine was shot in Turlock and died at the hospital, the Turlock Police Department said in a press release.

Officers responded to the 500 block of Twentieth Century Boulevard Tuesday morning at approximately 1:03 a.m., for reports of an aggravated assault in progress.

When Officers arrived, they located a female inside a vehicle who had been struck by gunfire.

Police say 27-year-old, Amythest Rochelle Cortez, resident of Gustine, was shot and transported to a local hospital.

Amythest and her unborn child died at the hospital later in the afternoon, police said.

The Turlock Police Department notified the family of Amythest and sent their condolences.

Turlock Police Department Detectives are investigating this tragic incident and are actively working on leads discovered in the investigation.
