CHP, Merced man killed in Madera County crash

The Madera California Highway Patrol is investigating a collision that left a Merced man dead and two others injured.

CHP responded to the collision on state route 145 east of road 33 at around 5:17 a.m. today.

CHP says the driver 29-year-old Marco A. Garibay of Santa Ana California attempted to pass a slow-moving big rig and failed to notice an on-coming vehicle.

Garibay veered across lanes of traffic to avoid a head-on crash causing the vehicle to overturn several times killing the 27-year-old front passenger, a rear passenger was taken with major injuries after he was ejected from the vehicle, CHP says he was not wearing a seatbelt and his identity is unknown at this time.

According to CHP, 33-year-old Israel Resendez of Merced was also a passenger in the vehicle, he walked away from the scene before officers arrived.

CHP investigators say the driver of the car is expected to be okay.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor at this time.
