CHP investigating fatal crash that left two dead in Merced County Tuesday afternoon

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that left two people dead Tuesday afternoon.

Officers from the Los Baños area California Highway Patrol responded to State Route 140 at the Northbound Interstate 5 off-ramp for reports of a big rig vs a sedan collision at around 2:11, the CHP report said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with the driver a 68-year-old man, and the passenger a 66-year-old woman both dead.

Both occupants of the Hyundai appeared to be residents from Las Vegas Nevada according to the CHP report.

The CHP said the driver of the Hyundai was traveling Northbound on Interstate 5 at the State Route 140 off-ramp and stopped at a posted stop sign. For unknown reasons the driver entered Eastbound traffic and was struck by a 2020 Peterbilt driven by 40-year-old Brett Cico from Delhi California.

Authorities say the impact caused major damage to the Hyundai and moderate damage to the semi-truck, Brett did not sustain injuries according to the CHP report.

Drugs, alcohol, and weather conditions do not appear to be a factor. The collision remains under investigation.
