An investigation is underway after a child’s body was found in a Merced home near Barclay and M Street Friday afternoon.

Officers responded to the home in North Merced in the search for missing 8-year-old Sophia Mason who was reported missing earlier today by the Merced Police Department.

The Merced Police Department received some information from Hayward Police after they say the mother was arrested on several unrelated charges in Newark, a city in the Bay Area.

Police say the mother of the 8-year-old was inconsistent with where her daughter was and gave suspicious statements when asked about Sophia.

Police have not said if the body found is Shopia Mason who has been missing for more than a month.
