5-year Veteran Atwater Police officer injured after collision in Winton

An Atwater police officer suffered minor injuries in a traffic collision Tuesday night in Winton according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP Officer’s responded to the 6500 block of North Winton Way for reports of a collision involving an Atwater police officer.

Upon arrival, officer’s located 3 vehicles involved. According to CHP officer Eric Zuniga, the male officer is a 5 year veteran of the Atwater Police Department, he was responding to assist Merced Sheriff deputies involved in a vehicle pursuit.

Authorities say 35-year-old Gloria Gutierrez of Winton was driving out of the shopping center parking lot in a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder when the front end of her vehicle struck the front end of the patrol vehicle traveling in the northbound lanes of Winton Way.

Upon impact of the two vehicles, the officer’s 2018 Ford Explorer patrol vehicle continued in a northwest direction and struck a parked vehicle at a residence, an electrical box, and the street light.

Debris from the collision also struck a vehicle traveling southbound on Winton Way, Zuniga said.

According to witness statements, the involved officer was traveling 50-55 mph without lights and sirens, Zuniga said.

The officer was transported by Riggs Ambulance to Mercy Medical Center with minor injuries, Gloria was taken for complaints of pain.

No information was provided on the alleged suspect who was being chased by deputies from the Merced sheriff’s department.

Alcohol or drugs are not a factor in this collision, no other injuries were reported.

The crash remains under investigation, anyone who may have witnessed the collision or captured video on their surveillance system is asked to contact the Merced California Highway Patrol Office at 209-356-6600.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a collision involving an Atwater Police officer.

CHP responded to the area of Winton Way just outside Turf Liquors for a report of a collision at approximately 9:37 p.m., today.

Upon arrival, CHP officers located several vehicles involved in the collision.

The officer was located outside the patrol vehicle with minor injuries and was taken by ambulance. At this time  it’s unknown if any other involved vehicles had occupants with injuries.

This is a developing story and the collision is currently being investigated. Stay tuned for further information when it becomes available.
