TANKER LOADED WITH WINE, CRASHES INTO PARKED SEMI TRUCK ON HIGHWAY 99

On August 18, 2018, at approximately 06:20 a.m., a 2019 Frieghtliner with an attached trailer was stopped on the right asphalt shoulder of SR-99 northbound, south of Westside Boulevard. The driver, Fikrie Fente, 34, was outside on the right side checking the big rig tires.

A 2009 Frieghtliner, with fully loaded 6500 gallons of wine, was traveling in the #3 lane, at approximately 60 miles hour, driven by Jose Carranza, 37. For unknown reasons, Carranza allowed his big rig to drift to the right shoulder.

The front of Carranza’s big rig collided with the rear of the box trailer. Both vehicles sustained major damage. The cab of the 2009 freight liner caught fire, but Carranza was assisted out of the burning semi by CHP personnel.

Carranza sustained major injuries and was med evacuated to a Modesto hospital. Fente did not sustain any injuries. CHP says alcohol or drugs are not suspected to be involved. The collision is under investigation.
