Several injured after two vehicle collision in Winton, CHP says

Several people were injured after a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Shaffer Road and Eucalyptus Avenue in Winton.

The crash was reported around 2:30 a.m. today, the two vehicles involved  were reported to be a Honda Accord and a Dodge Durango.

When CHP officers arrived at the scene, Alejandro Cortez Mandujano,the driver of the Honda was located partially ejected through the front windshield and the female passenger partially ejected out the opened passenger door, her identity was not immediately available, both individuals had to be extricated from the vehicle by EMS personnel.

Neither the driver and the passenger were wearing their seatbelt according to CHP.

Wendy Bojorquez Gutierrez, driver of the Dodge Durango, and passenger Nelson Heredia, both were located on the driver’s side top of the Dodge Durango after it flipped over on its side, both driver and passenger self-extricated from inside the vehicle.

CHP officers preliminary investigation revealed the Dodge Durango was traveling northbound on Shaffer Road at 50 MPH approaching the intersection with Eucalyptus Avenue.

The Honda Accord was driving eastbound on Eucalyptus Avenue approaching the intersection with Shaffer Road. The intersection is controlled by posted ‘STOP’ signs and painted white limit lines for eastbound/westbound traffic on Eucalyptus Avenue. There are no controls for traffic traveling northbound/southbound on Shaffer Road.  The driver of the Honda had been drinking and was determined to be under the influence of alcohol.

According to CHP public information officer Zuniga, the driver of the Honda either failed to stop for the posted ‘STOP’ sign or had stopped and pulled out in front of the Dodge Durango. As the Honda Accord entered the intersection into the path of the Dodge Durango, the front end struck the passenger side of the Honda Accord.

Madujano was placed under arrest for DUI. The driver and passenger of the Honda suffered major injuries and were transported by air ambulance to trauma centers in the Modesto Area.

The driver was flown to Memorial Medical Center and the passenger was flown to Doctors Medical Center. The driver of the Dodge Durango suffered minor injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to Mercy Medical Center.

Cortez Mandujano will be treated for his injuries and booked/arraigned with Merced County Jail. According to CHP the investigation is still ongoing, no other injuries were reported.
