Police locate second vehicle that was street racing, when another vehicle crashed into a tree in Merced

On February 20th, 2019, at around  9:48 p.m., Merced Police Officers were dispatched to Buena Vista and San Bruno Court for a major vehicle collision with a vehicle into a tree.

A grey 1998 Honda Civic driven by Ethan Samuel Leon, 18-year-old, was traveling at a very high rate of speed, eastbound on Buena Vista when Leon lost control of the car and crashed into the tree.

Arredondo, 18-year-old, was the passenger in the vehicle. Both parties sustained moderate injuries and were treated at local hospitals. During the investigations, officers located evidence of Leon racing another car when the collision occurred. Leon was booked at Merced County Jail for felony DUI. The other involved vehicle fled the scene.

Merced Police Officers completed a follow-up investigation and on February 22nd, 2019, Officers located the vehicle that fled the scene in the 100 Block of West Alexander.

The vehicle was being driven by Leonardo Valencia Vega, 19-year-old. Upon further investigation, it was determined that Vega was the driver of the vehicle the night it was involved in the street race and fled the scene. Vega was arrested and booked for felony hit and run and street racing. (Booking photo attached to this release)

Merced Police are asking citizens who may have witnessed or captured this street race on their video surveillance to please call Sgt. Dabney at 209 388-7719 or 209 385-6905.

    I dont understand why the other person is getting charged with a hit and run, if they didnt hit anything
