Man killed by passing vehicle while changing his tire in Merced County

On November 11, 2019, at approximately 8:32 p.m, the Merced Communication Center received a call of a pedestrian down on
Interstate-5 southbound, north of interstate Route-165 near Mercey Springs Road.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol Los Banos Area Office responded to
the scene to investigate the incident.

Upon arrival, officers located an unconscious male lying on the shoulder of the interstate and partially beneath the trailer of the vehicle.

The vehicle disabled on the highway shoulder was a white 2006 GMC Canyon with a white flatbed trailer.

During the investigation, officers say the man was changing the rear tire to his trailer when an unknown vehicle drove off the shoulder and struck the man and fled the scene traveling southbound on Interstate-5.

The time of the actual collision is still under investigation, but is believed to have taken place a short time before the initial call came in. The man was described only as a 51-year-old out of Santa Rosa California.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol are related in this collision at this time.

If you have any information, contact the Los Banos area CHP at 209-826-3811.
