Man hit by big rig in Merced, flown to hospital with major injuries

On January 14th, 2019, at approximately 7:00 p.m. a Traffic collision occurred at the Martin Luther King Jr Way Northbound highway 99 on-ramp. Upon California highway patrol arrival they located a man approximately 70-years-old that had been struck by a Big rig.

During the investigation CHP it was discovered that the pedestrian was walking from west to east across the on-ramp, approximately 100 feet from the on-ramp to the intersection of the freeway. The big rig was heading up on the ramp at approximately 15 MPH when the pedestrian was hit. The pedestrian was flown to a Modesto hospital with laceration injuries to the head.

No statements were provided by the pedestrian due to his injuries. The big rig driver approximately 40-years-old out of Sacramento was not injured. No drugs or alcohol are believed to be a factor on the big rig driver. Information on the pedestrian is limited at this time. No names are available at this time on the driver and pedestrian according to CHP.
