CHP Officer involved in collision with two vehicles, all drivers taken to a Modesto hospital

A California Highway Patrol officer was injured after being involved in a collision in the City of Modesto Tuesday night.

According to CHP officer Olsen, the 36-year-old female officer advised dispatch she was involved in a traffic collision.

Several law enforcement agencies responded to the intersections of ‘H’ and 6th Street on May 5th, 2020, at approximately 8:56 p.m., for the report of the crash.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and located the officer and two other vehicles who were involved in the crash.

The preliminary investigation indicates the 9-year veteran officer of the California Highway Patrol was driving a fully marked patrol vehicle westbound on H Street, approaching 6th Street when she was involved in the crash.

According to CHP reports, 57-year-old Maria Nevarez was driving a 2015 Honda SUV northbound on 6th Street approaching H Street along with a second vehicle a 2018 Hyundai sedan driven by 18-year-old Natalie Coria, all three vehicles entered the intersection and the front of the Honda and Hyundai struck the driver side of the patrol vehicle.

Both Maria Nevarez and Natalie Coria were transported by ground ambulance to Memorial Medical Center with minor injuries.

The CHP officer was transported by ground ambulance to Doctors Medical Center with major injuries, yet non-life threatening injuries. A passenger with Natalie, 18-year-old Maci Smothers was not injured in the crash according to CHP.

According to CHP, all involved parties were properly wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision.

Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to have been a factor in this collision.

This investigation is in its early stages. Further details will be available as the investigation progresses.
