CHP arrest man in Bakersfield for hitting and killing a bicyclist in Merced County

A man as been arrested for hitting and killing a bicyclist in Merced County.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the area of Bellevue Road and Utah Street for a vehicle vs bicyclist collision at around 7:58 Monday evening.

When officers arrived, they determined the collision was a hit and run. Officers located the bicyclist, a 22-year man out of Los Angeles, who died at the scene due to the injuries.

Authorities say 64-year-old Michael Harris out of Santa Paula was driving a 2016 Buick Regal on westbound Bellevue Road, approaching the bicyclist when he struck the rear of the bicyclist.

Authorities say,  Mr. Harris called the Merced CHP Communication Center at around 11:30 p.m., to advise he was involved in a collision and thought he hit a deer.

Officers spoke with Mr. Harris by telephone and determined Mr. Harris was in the Bakersfield Area.

Bakersfield CHP made contact with Harris and determined that his vehicle had been involved in a major collision.

Harris was taken into custody and Merced CHP officers responded to meet the Bakersfield CHP and took custody of Mr. Harris, he was later booked into the Merced County Jail for felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter.
