77-year-old woman killed last night in Merced County, this is what happened

On December 16, 2019, at approximately 9:30 pm officers from CHP Merced responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian collision on Santa Fe Drive west of Wallace Road.

Their preliminary investigation indicates that a Nissan Altima, driven by  a 27-year-old female from Livingston, was traveling westbound on Santa Fe Drive, west of Wallace Road.

A female pedestrian, only described as a 77-year-old from Winton was walking in a westerly direction in the westbound lane of Santa Fe Drive and a male pedestrian a 78-year -old Winton resident, was walking next to the female pedestrian, in the north shoulder.

 

The driver of the Nissan observed the pedestrian walking in the westbound lane and swerved to the left but was unable to avoid a collision. The right front of the Nissan struck the female pedestrian and the female pedestrian came to rest on the north shoulder of Santa Fe Drive, west of Wallace Road.

Unfortunately, the female pedestrian succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at scene. The male pedestrian suffered moderate injuries as a result of this collision.

It is unknown if the male pedestrian was struck by the vehicle or by the female pedestrian. The male pedestrian was transported to Doctors Medical Center by Riggs Ambulance for treatment.

The driver of the Nissan stayed at the scene and is being cooperative with the investigation.

At this time, alcohol or drug impairment are not suspected but is still under investigation.
