23-year-old man shot near Stowell Elementary School identified

The Merced Police Department identified the victim who was shot On August 20th, 2019, in south Merced near Stowell Elementary School.

Officers were advised to respond to the area of East 9th and “D” streets at around 5:47 p.m. for a report of a shooting with one male down.

While officers were responding dispatch also advised a 10-year-old male may have also been shot.

Officers arrived and located the victim, 23-year-old Christopher Joyner on the ground suffering from several gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

Joyner was transported by air ambulance to Modesto for treatment, he remains in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries according to police.

Upon further investigation, it was determined there were no other victims.

According to witnesses, a Hispanic male suspect, wearing a red bandana over his face, ran up to Joyner and fired multiple shots at him.

The suspect ran off and reportedly got into an unknown make and model vehicle which left the area traveling West on East 9th Street.

The suspect has not been identified and the shooting is being investigated as gang-related.
