On December 25, 2018 at approximately 1:57 am, a tow truck operator was loading a vehicle onto a tow truck on the right shoulder of northbound I-5 north of Mathews Road. A 2001 GMC was in the #2 lane of I-5 and the driver lost control.

The GMC veered to the right toward the shoulder and struck the tow truck and operator. Following this collision, the GMC overturned back into the traffic lanes and collided with two other vehicles. The tow truck operator succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the GMC, Kylle Thomasson, 25-year-old EX American Idol Musician, from Stockton was arrested for being under the influence of alcohol.

Thomasson was medically cleared and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail for felony manslaughter and DUI.
