Police arrest man for killing dog at a Merced home, this is what police say

The Merced Police Department arrested a man for animal cruelty.

Officers responded to the 100 block of Manzanita Drive for a report of possible animal abuse.

When officers arrived, they located 30-year-old Jesus Fonseca inside the residence with a deceased dog.

Officers learned that the dog belonged to Fonseca’s sister who lived at the residence.

Fonseca told officers that he was upset at the dog and had kicked it once which caused the dog to die.

Officers conducting the investigation quickly determined that Fonseca was not being truthful about the circumstances that led to the dog’s death. Officers determined that Fonseca had beaten the dog to death with objects in the residence and arrested Fonseca for animal cruelty.

Because animal cruelty is a zero-bail crime, officers contacted the on-call judge with whom they requested and were granted a bail increase on Fonseca.

Fosenca was booked into the Merced County Jail for animal cruelty causing the death of the animal.

Merced Police are asking anyone with any information regarding this crime to contact Officer Zazueta at 209-388-7739 or by email at zazuetat@cityofmerced.org.
