Man Shot with a less lethal round and taser after pointing knife at Atwater officers

On November 22nd, 2021, at approximately 11:48 a.m., The Atwater Police Department was contacted regarding an adult male kicking and vandalizing vehicles in the parking lot in the 1800 block West Bellevue Road.

Officers responded to the incident and located a male matching the provided description by a witness. Upon contacting the male, he was holding a knife and pointed it towards the officers. The man ignored officer commands to drop the weapon. A less lethal round and a taser were deployed to assist in gaining compliance.

The subject was placed in handcuffs without further incident and later transported to the hospital on a mental health evaluation hold. Neither the suspect nor officers were injured. Due to the medical nature of the incident the detainees name will not be released at this time, the incident remains under investigation.

Officers are in the early stages of the investigation and are asking the publics assistance in providing surveillance video in the area at the time of the incident.
