Man shot and killed Saturday night in Merced, identified

A man who was shot and killed Saturday night has been identified as 29-year-old Luis Ibarra from Merced according to Merced Sheriff Deputy Allen.

Merced Police officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 1200 block of Canal Street at around 9:35 p.m.

When officers arrived they located Ibarra suffering from critical gunshots wounds.

Life-saving measures were attempted by officers and medical personnel, however, the victim died on scene.

Officers also saw a vehicle believed to be the suspects involved, the alleged suspects were fleeing the area at a high rate of speed.

After a short pursuit, the vehicle came to a stop near Farmdale elementary school, the occupants ran from the vehicle but were apprehended by officers.

Officers arrested 19-year-old Rafael Patino and 19-year-old Jossiah Quintero for murder, prohibited person/convicted felon in possession of firearms, and gang enhancements.

Detectives believe the shooting could be gang-related.
