MAN LEADS MERCED POLICE IN A HIGH SPEED CHASE THAT ENDS IN THE FRANKLIN AREA

(THIRD UPDATE)

The Merced Police Department has learned, through the investigation, that the initial attempt to stop Barragan’s vehicle was in the area of “M” Street and Buena Vista Drive not on Merced College campus as originally reported.

Barragan was driving his vehicle east on Buena Vista Drive, going through the stop signs on Buena Vista and “M” Street at a high rate of speed. A Merced College police officer saw this reckless driving and attempted a traffic stop on Barragan in the 500 block of Buena Vista Drive.

The Merced College Police attempted to stop a reckless driver on campus. The vehicle sped off going south on “G” Street. Merced College Police pursued the vehicle to the area of W. Olive Avenue and “M” Street.

A Merced Police officer located the suspect vehicle in the area of “M” Street and Fairfield Drive. The officer ultimately discharged his weapon at the suspect and suspect vehicle. The suspect then fled the scene, in the vehicle, and Merced College Police pursued the suspect again.

The suspect ran from the vehicle in the area of Belcher Avenue and W. Santa Fe. The suspect was arrested hiding in a back yard to a residence off of Franklin Road.

The Merced Police Department Investigations Unit is actively working on this investigation. The name of the officer involved and the suspect are being withheld at this time.

Merced, CA- On September 21st, 2017 at around 1:25PM A chase was reported near the Merced College area. The full details leading up to the chase and shooting were not available at that time. The pursuit headed into the area of M Street and Olive Avenue.

A Merced police officer opened fire in the area of “M” Street and Fairfield by Jack in the Box after the suspect tried to run an officer over with the vehicle. Authorities gave chase into the Franklin area and Santa Fe Rd were the suspect abandoned his vehicle.

The suspect, described as a man believed to be in his 20s, was captured in the backyard of a home in the Franklin area. His name was not immediately available. No injuries were reported to the officer and the suspect.
