Man arrested after high-speed pursuit with Merced Police

Merced police officers arrested a man after he refused to stop and lead officers on a high-speed pursuit.

Merced Police Department Gang Violence Suppression Unit (GVSU) assisted Merced Police Detectives in attempting to stop 28-year-old Mark Whitaker who was wanted for an outstanding warrant for being a convicted felon in possession of firearms.

GVSU officers attempted to stop Whitaker when he was observed driving in the 1600 block of Martin LutherKing Jr Way at around 3:59 p.m. but refused to stop and engaged officers in a high-speed pursuit.

The pursuit lasted 5.7 miles when Whitaker exited N/B Hwy 99 at the Atwater / Merced Expressway exit according to the police department.

Whitaker attempted to get back on northbound Highway 99 but hit a pole and his vehicle became disabled. Whitaker fled on foot and was apprehended by GVSU officers after a foot chase.

Whitaker claimed he was injured after the crash. He was transported to a hospital to be checked for any injuries. After medical clearance, Whitaker was arrested and booked on charges of felony reckless driving and evading officers, and a prohibited person in possession of firearms, and resisting and obstructing a peace officer.
