Infiniti traveling 100mph splits power pole in half, then hitting several trees

On March 31, 2019, at approximately 7:14 pm, Merced CHP Communications Office received a call of a solo vehicle rollover collision on Winton Way.

CHP Officers arrived at the scene and determined that the driver 18-year-old Jose Cardenas Vargas of Winton was driving his 2017 Infiniti on Northbound Winton Way, just south of Palm Avenue.

Per witness statements and physical evidence the Infiniti was driving in an excess of 100 mph, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the vehicle and traveled off onto the west shoulder of Winton Way colliding with a utility power pole.

The Infiniti continued to roll out of control multiple times in a northwesterly direction, colliding with two fences and six trees.

The passenger, 19-year-old Martha Garcia Flores from Atwater was transported to Memorial Medical center by air ambulance for major injuries.

Cardenas Vargas was transported to Doctor’s Medical Center by ambulance for major injuries. No drugs/alcohol are a factor to this collision.
