On August 7th, 2019, at approximately 8:15: p.m., the California Highway Patrol responded to Northbound 99 south of the R street exit for a report of a collision.
Upon officers arrival, officers contacted the owner of a 2016 Toyota 4-Runner driven by 45-year-old Fergey Khripunov from Texas and a 2014 Ford Focus driven by 20-year-old Samuel Toves from Los Gatos California.
Upon further investigation, officers were told that a lifted light-colored brown\grey truck had rear-ended two vehicles who slowed down for a construction zone and left the scene.
With the help of Merced Police, officers located the truck at the intersections of West 2nd and T street.
The driver of the 2005 Chevrolet 2500 is 36-year-old Juan Carlos Cabeza out of Atwater.
Juan was located in the area and taken into custody for DUI and hit and run causing injuries according to jail records.
According to officer Zuniga, the driver of the Toyota 4-runner was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Samuel Toves was flown to a Modesto Hospital with internal injuries according to family members.
