Fire threatened homes in South Merced Sunday afternoon

A  fire on Sunday afternoon threatened residences along South Bermuda Street and Cone Avenue in South Merced.

Merced City Fire Department firefighters along with Cal Fire were dispatched to the 300 block of South Bermuda Street at approximately 3:30 p.m Sunday, according to Cal Fire Battalion Chief Brian Neely.

Units arrived on scene to find heavy fire in numerous piles of debris and residential fences, the fire did cause some minimal damage to two structures, Battalion Chief Neely said.

Four Merced County Fire engines, two Merced City Fire engines, one Merced County water tender, and one Merced County Battalion Chief, a total of about fifteen personnel responded to the scene to assist.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains suspicious, “there was an individual seen leaving the area where the fire started and that is now under investigation”, Neely said.
