Officers arrest man for criminal threats and aggravated assault on officers

A man was arrested on criminal threats charges and aggravated assault on officers yesterday night.

Officers were dispatched to 2653 Midge Avenue for a report of criminal threats at approximately 8:00 p.m. yesterday night.

Officers learned that the suspect 26-year-old Michael Gonzales had threatened his neighbors with brass knuckles and vandalized their fence.

When officers attempted to take Gonzales into custody Gonzales climbed on the roof of his residence and refused to come down.

Merced Police Department Hostage Negotiations Team (HNT) was called to the residence. During the time they attempted to get him to come down Gonzales threw several items at the negotiators and other officers.

Gonzales eventually pulled a large I bolt from the roof of the residence, jumped down, and charged at officers.

Officers used less then lethal means to disarm and take Gonzales into custody.

Gonzales is known to officers. In the last two months he has been arrested for the negligent discharge of a firearm, threatening and trying to attack an officer while armed with a knife.

 

Officers say Gonzales is a threat to the public, they requested and were granted a bail enhancement to one million dollars.

Gonzales was booked for 7 counts of aggravated assault on an officers, 6 counts of resisting arrest with violence, 6 counts of assault and battery, criminal threats, and vandalism.
