Early Sunday morning fire destroys about a dozen vehicles, and several debris in Merced property

On June 7th, 2020, at approximately 4:45 a.m., Merced County Fire Department along with the City of Merced Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 1076 East Childs Avenue.

Upon firefighters arrival, heavy fire was seen at an abandoned residence, a 30×50 shop, approximately 12 vehicles and numerous amount of debris on the property.

The first Battalion officer at scene requested a ladder truck and one fire engine through mutual aid from Merced City Fire.

The fire was contained just before 6:00 a.m., and was called controlled at approximately 10:00 a.m.

There was a total of three fire engines, one water tender, and one Battalion chief officer from Merced County Fire Department at scene, and a ladder truck, fire engine and one Battalion chief officer from Merced City Fire.

The property had recently been noticed for fire hazard weed abatement issues.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
