Driver Pinned in Vehicle after Big Rig crash in Merced County

Dr. Gary W. Tamkin, who is the Medical Director of California Highway Patrol, visited the Merced CHP office today for a ride-a-long with Officer Afferino.

During the ride-a-long a big rig traveling southbound on Applegate Road was involved in a collision with a sedan traveling on White Crane Road.

As a result of the collision, the driver of the sedan was pinned in the driver seat.

Officer Afferino and Dr. Tamkin responded and were first on the scene. Officer Afferino immediately began to make the scene safe while Dr. Tamkin began to provide medical aid to the driver of the sedan who was responsive upon contact.

Additional personnel arrived at the scene and the driver was subsequently transported to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Great job by all involved!

Fun Fact about Dr. Tamkin, not only does he hold medical oversight for over 7,000 California Highway Patrol Officers, he is also a fully operational member of the Merced County Sheriff’s Office Regional SWAT Team, holding the position of SWAT Physician.
