Atwater police searching for man and vehicle of interest regarding shooting death of a woman

Atwater Police is investigating a report of a shooting that left one dead on Tuesday night.

At around 10:15 p.m., Atwater police officers responded to the area of Belmont Street and Secretariat Drive for reports of a man saying her girlfriend was shot.

Officers arrived and found an injured and unresponsive adult female near a silver Honda at the intersection.

Police and medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, unfortunately, she was declared dead at the scene.

Police say evidence collected at the scene led officers to a residence half a block north of the scene. Authorities say evidence from a shooting was found and an autopsy was conducted this morning and the results are pending.

The motive of the shooting and why the victim was in the area are under investigation at this time.

The male subject found with the victim is being questioned by authorities. Officers also canvassed the area looking for surveillance footage to piece together the events surrounding the shooting.

Officers are looking for a person and vehicle of interest in this case. Authorities are looking for a Fernando Perez (no other description at this time), driving a light-colored BMW or Mercedes sedan with front-end damage.

The victim’s identity was not released pending notification of next of kin.
