21-year-old man arrested after leading officers on High-speed chase in Merced

Merced police arrested a man after leading officers on a high-speed chase through some neighborhood streets, he also failed to stop at several stop signs.

Officer McKeeman attempted to stop the speeding white Charger in the 2000 block of G Street this morning at approximately 8:00 a.m., the Merced Police Department reported.

The vehicle was traveling south in excess of 70 MPH. Once Officer McKeeman pulled in behind the vehicle, the driver accelerated at a high rate of speed turning West onto 18th Street.

The suspect continued to speed at excess of 70 MHP and also failed to stop at several neighborhood stop signs.

The driver continued to M Street, turning South towards 16th Street. Officer Crain was able to intercept the vehicle at 16th and M Streets and pick up the chase.

The charger continued west towards Hwy 59 ultimately turning north and yielding at Bear Creek. The driver then exited the vehicle, laid on the ground and surrendered.

Police identified the suspect as 21-year-old (S) Johnathan Cornelius Townsend Jr.

Townsend was arrested for felony evading and reckless driving.
