15-year-old accused of shooting and killing 18-year-old in Merced arrested in Modesto

A 15-year-old is being accused of a shooting that left one dead and another injured in Merced last year.

On December 30, 2021, at approximately 4:52 P.M., Merced PD Officers responded to a shooting in the 1200 block of W Drive in the city of Merced.  It was determined that a 15-year-old male suspect pulled out a firearm and shot into an occupied vehicle at that location.  The driver of the vehicle fled to the 1000 block of W Street and waited for emergency medical personnel.

Officers arrived on scene and found two people who had been shot.   A 17-year-old female victim was transported to a regional trauma center with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.  18-year-old Mykka Thomas of Merced was shot several times and pronounced deceased at the scene.

The 15-year-old suspect immediately went on the run.  Detective Steven Odom was assigned as the lead investigator on the case.  Detective Odom spent several months trying to track down the 15-year-old suspect and identifying those responsible for helping the juvenile avoid capture by law enforcement.

On March 26, 2022, at approximately 7:00 A.M., Merced PD Detectives with the assistance of Merced PD SWAT and the Merced Area Gang and Narcotics Enforcement Team (MAGNET) served a search warrant at a residence in the 1000 block of Bristlecone Way in the city of Modesto.

The 15-year-old suspect was located at the residence and taken into custody without incident.  He was booked for murder and various other charges into the Iris Garrett Juvenile Justice Correctional Complex in Merced.
