Police arrest two gang members in Merced, both were wanted felons

Merced Police arrested two wanted felons Friday afternoon.

Officer Lupian and Sergeant Perez with the Gang Violence Suppression Unit were patrolling the unit block of West 19th Street at around 4:50 p.m., when they observed 3 males in an altercation.

When the officers attempted to contact the individuals one of the subjects ran from the area.

Police locate weapon inside the residence

The two remaining subjects reported the male who ran away had brandished a firearm during the altercation. Officers developed information that the subject who fled was inside a nearby residence on West 19th Street.

Officers surrounded the residence and authored a search warrant for the residence. Eventually, two males voluntarily walked out of the residence and were taken into custody.

Both were identified as 33-year-old Fredrick Mays and 20-year-old Trayvone Peterson.

Officers identified Mays as the subject who initially ran from the altercation with the firearm. Officers searched the residence and located a 9mm semi-automatic handgun inside.

Both Mays and Peterson are documented gang members and had warrants for their arrests according to the press release from Merced Police.

Mays is prohibited from possessing any firearms due to his previous criminal history.

Mays was booked at Merced County Jail for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, brandishing a firearm, resisting/delaying officers, gang enhancements and warrant from California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Peterson was arrested for resisting/delaying officers, gang enhancements and a local warrant.
