Police arrested a man who allegedly shot and killed a man in Atwater on December 30th, 2020.

Officers responded to the 2400 block of Atwater Boulevard at around 3:50 a.m. Wednesday.

When officers arrived to the area, they found a
Hispanic man lying in the street suffering from a gunshot wound.

Emergency personnel performed life-saving
measures, unfortunately, the man died.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

30-year-old Matthew Shimkus was booked to the Merced County Sheriff’s jail on charges of homicide, narcotics possession, illegal possession of a firearm, and possession of stolen property.
