Merced Police arrest man responsible for the shooting near Golden Valley High

On March 6th, 2020, at approximately 3:00 p.m. Merced Police responded to the intersection of East Childs Avenue and Carol Avenue, for a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located a victim suffering from multiple gunshots wounds to the torso.

Officers, Merced Fire and RIGGS ambulance personnel provided medical aid. The victim was flown to a Modesto area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The victim remains in serious condition,witnesses stated that Barragan-Munguia had been involved in a “road rage” incident with the victim which escalated to the shooting.

Investigating officers learned that the suspect in the shooting had just been involved in a domestic violence assault in the area of Weaver School.

Officers searched for Barragan-Munguia and located him in south Merced. A pursuit was initiated that proceeded northbound on Highway 99 at speeds up to 100 MPH.

As the pursuit left Merced County the California Highway Patrol and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department assisted by taking the lead on the pursuit. The pursuit ended when Barragan-Munguia’s vehicle became disabled after a collision in the City of Modesto.

The suspect exited the vehicle and was taken into custody. There are no outstanding suspects and a firearm was located in the suspect’s vehicle.

39-year-old Barragan-Munguia was booked into the Merced County Jail for several felony offenses including, attempted murder, felon in possession of a firearm, corporal injury on a spouse, terrorist threats, and evading a peace officer.
