Merced police arrest felon in possession of a firearm

A vehicle stop for expired registration tags ended with a man being arrested after a gun was located in the vehicle according to the Merced police department.

Merced police Officer Barroso was driving in the 1700 block of Glen Avenue at around 2:51 a.m this morning when he observed a Black Chevy Impala with expired registration driving in front of him.

Officer Barroso conducted a vehicle stop and contacted 21-year-old Alonzo Shakur Smith.

Smith was found to be driving on a suspended driver’s license. During a search of the vehicle, Officer Barroso located a loaded Glock 19 with shaved down serial numbers tucked in between the driver’s seat and the center console.

Smith was arrested for felon in possession of a loaded firearm, altered serial number on a firearm, driving with a suspended license and expired registration. Smith was booked at the Merced County Jail.
