Merced police arrest 19-year-old who was strangling a man in his 50s with a cord

Merced Police have arrested a man for attempted homicide.

Officers responded at around 6:30 a.m. Saturday to the 3300 block of R Street for an unknown medical issue.

When City Fire arrived at the scene they saw a man on top of another male. The suspect, 19-year-old Jose Perez had a cord wrapped around the man’s neck and was strangling him.

Upon seeing first responders Perez released the victim.

Officers took Perez into custody while Fire and RIGGS personnel provided aid to the victim.

The victim is a Hispanic male approximately 50 years old. The victim was taken to a Modesto hospital and is in stable condition.

Perez was booked into the Merced County Jail for attempted homicide. Merced Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact Detective Barajas at (209) 388-7828.
