Man leads Merced CHP officers on a chase, this is why he did it

On December 21st, 2018 at approximately 2:52 p.m, a Merced Area CHP Officer was traveling south on Plainsburg Road, south of Gerard Avenue and observed a blue Honda Accord traveling north on Plainsburg Road approaching his location.

The Officer observed the Honda was emitting excessive smoke as it traveled. The Officer made a U-turn in an attempt to make an enforcement stop, just before the Officer activated his emergency lights the driver of the Honda accelerated and passed slower moving traffic. The Officer obtained a speed of 82 MPH as it traveled northbound.

The driver then failed to stop at a 4-way controlled intersection at Plainsburg Road and East Childs Avenue and a pursuit was initiated. The driver then turned west into an orchard and eventually turned west onto East Childs Avenue. The driver continued to evade capture while driving at high speeds in light to no traffic conditions.

The driver finally turned north onto Moomjean Avenue, which is a dead-end road. The driver abandoned the Honda while it was still rolling and fled the area on foot. The Honda subsequently collided into the left rear of a 5th wheel travel trailer and a shrub. The driver was last seen running westbound through an orchard, north of SR-140.

Delatorre told officers that he fled because there’s a warrant for his arrest for violation of probation. Delatorre further related that he fell while he was running and hurt his wrist. Officers transported Delatorre to Mercy Medical Center for medical clearance prior to booking him at the Merced County Jail.
