A man who was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Winton has been identified by the Merced County Coroner as 30-year-old Michael Tamez.

CHP officers responded to the area of Santa Fe Drive and California Avenue after receiving a call at around 8:15 Sunday morning regarding an adult male laying on the side of the roadway.

When officers arrived, they located a man in his 30’s deceased, CHP public information officer Zuniga told Merced Golden Wire News.

Authorities say the man appeared to have been walking on Santa Fe Saturday night when he was hit by an unknown vehicle.

This is an ongoing investigation and the California Highway Patrol are asking that if any witnesses saw or know of this incident please call the CHP Merced Communications center at 209-356-2900, or during business hours (Mon-Fri) at 209-356-6600.
