Man crashes vehicle, runs from police holding a bag of Methamphetamine

A man was arrested by Merced Police officers after leading them on a chase.

Officers from the Gang Violence Suppression Unit attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 300 block of M Street on June 13th, 2020, at approximately 7:52 PM.

The driver was identified as 50-year-old Francisco Baez. During the investigation, Baez fled the scene in his vehicle.

Officers pursued the vehicle until it crashed into a fire hydrant at San Augustine Avenue and Cassis Drive in Merced.

Baez immediately ran from the vehicle holding a bag, he was apprehended after a short foot chase and taken into custody.

The bag Baez was holding contained 2 pounds of crystal methamphetamine. During the pursuit, Baez also threw a bag of narcotics out of the window.

“This amount of crystal methamphetamine is consistent with possession with the intent for sales”, Seargent Perez said.

Baez was booked into the Merced County Sheriff’s Department jail on several narcotics charges, resisting arrest, felony evading in a motor vehicle and a gang enhancement.

Merced Police are asking anyone with any information regarding this crime to contact Officer Odom at 209-388-7814 or by email at odoms@cityofmerced.org.
