Man arrested for striking a Merced Liquor store clerk in the head with a wood piece

Merced Police arrested a man responsible for an assault with a deadly weapon on Tuesday night at a Merced Liquor Store.

Officers responded to 1108 G street at the Buy n Bye Market for a report of a possible robbery.

Upon officers arrival, officers located a store clerk laying on the ground behind the counter with a large laceration and swelling to the top of his head.

Police say the suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Marcus Slaton had entered the store at approximately 8:53 p.m. and hit the clerk in the head with a 2X2 piece of wood and fled the scene.

The victim was transported by Riggs Ambulance to the hospital where he is receiving medical treatment.

Slaton was located by Merced Police in the 200 block of East 9th Street. A witness positively identified Slaton as the suspect who struck the store clerk with the piece of wood.

Slaton was transported to the Merced Police Department where he was interviewed by detectives. He was later booked into the Merced County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon.
