Man arrested for armed robbery, he tried to steal a sandwich and soda, police say

Merced Police say they arrested 30-year-old Charles Clay for armed robbery at a Merced gas station.

Officers responded to the 1400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way on Monday, at the Smiley’s Shell gas station for a report of a robbery.

Authorities say Clay walked into the business and took a sandwich and bottled soda from the fridge.

As Clay started to walk out of the business, the clerk asked him to pay for the items or put them back. The clerk came around the counter to confront Clay, and Clay pulled a knife from his pocket and threatened the clerk.

The clerk backed off and Clay took off walking, police say.

Merced Police are asking anyone with any information regarding this crime to contact Officer Avery at 209-388-7814 or by email at averyw@cityofmerced.org.
