Man arrested by Merced Police on multiple arson charges

On May 18, 2020, at approximately 11:56 p.m., Officer Richter of the Merced Police department located a dumpster fire in the unit block of west 16th street.

While investigating he also located another dumpster fire in the 100 block alley of west 16th street that appeared to have just been ignited. Both dumpsters were in close proximity to businesses.

A citizen contacted Officer Richter about a suspicious subject attempting to light another dumpster on fire in the 100 blk of west 16th street. Officers contacted 33-year-old Jeremy Paul Garcia in the 200 blk of west 16th street after he fled the area. Burned material was located at the third scene linking Garcia to the attempted arson.

Garcia admitted to lighting the fires and was booked into the Merced County jail for two counts of Arson, one count of attempted Arson, and resisting arrest.
