ATWATER OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING LEAVES ONE MAN DEAD

Atwater CA- On Tuesday, October 17th, 2017 at approximately 1:00 PM, Atwater Police responded to the Winton Garden Apartments located at 3100 Winton Way in Atwater to a report of shots being fired from an upstairs apartment. While officers were en route to the location Dispatch provided an update that the male subject was outside walking around the complex with a gun but were updated again that he was back inside of his apartment.

Several officers converged on the scene and met with the person reporting just south of the apartment entrance. Atwater High School was immediately placed on lockdown. Officers were directed to the rear, east end of the complex where the person with the gun was said to be inside of an upstairs apartment. As officers approached a staircase leading up to the apartment, a male appeared in the doorway.

Two officers, fearing for their lives, opened fire on the male after giving several commands for him to drop his weapon and to show them his hands. The male subject was struck by the gunfire and was air lifted to a Modesto hospital soon thereafter where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Both officers were placed on administrative leave per department protocol pending the investigation. The names of both the officers and the suspect are not being released at this time as this incident is still under investigation by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Sam Joseph wishes to thank the Merced County Sheriff’s Office, Cal-Fire, Riggs Ambulance and the California Highway Patrol for their assistance and professionalism throughout this investigation.
