Merced, CA-On Saturday, October 21 2017, the Merced Police Department’s Gang Violence Suppression Unit (GVSU) officers conducted a parole search of an apartment occupied by gang members Salvador Hernandez and Curtis May in the 1100 block of G St in Merced.
During the search, officers located a 9mm handgun. Both suspects are convicted felons and prohibited from being in possession of any firearms. Hernandez and May were arrested and booked at the Merced County Jail for felon in possession of a firearm, parole/probation violation, resisting arrest and gang enhancements.

Atwater,CA – On October 18th, 2017 at approximately 4:50 PM, Atwater PD officers were dispatched to a hit and run accident in the 2600 Block of Atwater Boulevard involving two young children. Officers arrived to find both a four-year-old victim and a two-year-old victim who had both been struck by a Honda Civic as the driver was backing up in the parking lot of the apartment complex.
The driver of the Honda fled the scene prior to officers arriving. The identity of the driver was revealed to officers by a family member who contacted her telling her to return to the scene. Officers obtained a statement from the driver upon her return and ultimately placed her under arrest, charging her with felony hit and run.
She was identified as 23-year-old Billie G. Valencia of Atwater. Both children were transported to the hospital to be treated for their injuries and are expected to be okay. Valencia was transported and booked into Merced County Jail.

Atwater CA- On Tuesday, October 17th, 2017 at approximately 1:00 PM, Atwater Police responded to the Winton Garden Apartments located at 3100 Winton Way in Atwater to a report of shots being fired from an upstairs apartment. While officers were en route to the location Dispatch provided an update that the male subject was outside walking around the complex with a gun but were updated again that he was back inside of his apartment.
Several officers converged on the scene and met with the person reporting just south of the apartment entrance. Atwater High School was immediately placed on lockdown. Officers were directed to the rear, east end of the complex where the person with the gun was said to be inside of an upstairs apartment. As officers approached a staircase leading up to the apartment, a male appeared in the doorway.
Two officers, fearing for their lives, opened fire on the male after giving several commands for him to drop his weapon and to show them his hands. The male subject was struck by the gunfire and was air lifted to a Modesto hospital soon thereafter where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Both officers were placed on administrative leave per department protocol pending the investigation. The names of both the officers and the suspect are not being released at this time as this incident is still under investigation by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.

Even with strong winds over the past week, CAL FIRE and fire agencies have responded to nearly 200 fires. Nearly 11,000 firefighters are working across the state to contain these massive blazes and contain all new fires that start. Currently there is about 15 active wild fires.
Merced, Ca-On October 10, 2017, Rafael Lopez, 29 of Merced was arrested for a double homicide that took place in the City of Merced. On 05/23/13, officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of W. 12th Street for a shooting. The two victims were identified as Alberto Narvaez, age 22 and Miguel Narvaez, age 27, both are residents of Merced.
Both victims died from their gunshot wounds. Investigators worked leads and interviewed witnesses but were unable to develop a suspect at the time. Over the next few years there were advancements in technology and tips from the public that helped investigators to develop a suspect.
After some investigation and help from witnesses, Detective Jeff Horn was able to arrest Rafael Lopez for the murders of the Narvaez brothers on 10/10/17. Lopez was interviewed about the case and then booked for several felony charges including homicide.
