Woman with knife arrested after standoff with Merced Police officers for several hours

Merced Police have arrested a woman after a standoff with Officers for several hours.

Officers responded at around 11:53 a.m., Thursday to a report of a woman with a knife at the Gateway Motel in the 1400 block of West 16th Street.

Officers learned that 32-year-old Chanel Hearn of Modesto, had threatened to stab and shoot other guests and the manager of the hotel.

Hearn refused to exit the motel room and made threats to stab the officers while brandishing a large knife through a window.

Officers backed away from the room and called for additional resources. While waiting for those resources to arrive Hearn exited the room yelling and making threats to the officers.

A less-than-lethal extended range impact baton was used to stop Hearn’s advance on the officers. Hearn was struck by the baton and was able to retreat back into the motel room where she barricaded the door.

Merced County Behavioral Health Mobile Crisis Unit and the Merced Police Department Crisis Negotiation Team responded to assist.

After several hours of negotiating with Hearn she continued to refuse to surrender. Officers then deployed tear gas into the motel room resulting in Hearn’s surrender.

Hearn was taken to Mercy Hospital for medical clearance due to tear gas exposure and the baton strike. No significant injuries were noted by RIGGS Ambulance Service at the scene of the incident.

Upon medical clearance Hearn will be booked into the Merced County Jail for criminal threats and resisting arrest.

A booking photo of Hearn was not available at the time of this press release, once booked we will update.

Merced Police are asking anyone with any information regarding this crime to contact dispatch at 209-385-6912.
