Was the “Black Lives Matter” Mural approved for Downtown Merced?

On Monday night, Merced City Council members discussed approving a Black Lives Matter Street Mural near Bob Hart Square.

During the 6 hour City Council meeting, City Council Members Fernando Echevarria, Delray Shelton, Kevin Blake, Matthew Serratto, Mayor Mike Murphy decided not to approve the project, They all voted “Yes” on denying the project at this time, Council members Jill McLeod, and Anthony Martinez voted “No” on denying the project.

Several residents sent emails and voice calls to the City Council opposing the “BLM” Mural.

The Black Lives Mural was expected to be painted in yellow about 400 feet-long on Canal and West 16th Streets behind 5 Ten Bistro.

The Mural was expected to be low maintenance and will only be displayed for a period of 9 months.
