Suspicious powder found in exterior mailbox of Merced human services agency

A hazmat situation was reported at the Merced County Human Services Agency on Wardrobe Avenue today just after 8:30 a.m.

According to Merced Battalion Chief Franklin, a powdered substance was found in the exterior of a mailbox.

The incident is under investigation after the same powder substance was found at another exterior mailbox in downtown Merced at approximately 9:30 a.m.

Crews are in protective gear collecting the powder.

According to Battalion Chief Franklin, the powder was determined to be some type of Sulfur.

At this time it’s under investigation and they hope video surveillance cameras captured a possible suspect. No evacuation of the area was necessary.

As of 11:20 a.m. Merced Police and Hazmat were still at the scene.
