Man arrested in Atwater for leaving sulfur powder at two mail boxes in Merced

Merced Police Officers responded to Merced County Human Services Agency at 2115 Wardrobe Ave and 1557 W Main Street for a suspicious powder substance placed on the property.

Cal Fire Hazardous Material Team responded and identified the powder as sulfur, a non-caustic chemical.

Officers obtained video surveillance and later identified the suspect as 38-year-old Robert Moore. Moore was located in the City of Atwater and was arrested.

Moore admitted to placing the powder on both properties but didn’t provide any details for his motives.

Moore was booked for two counts of criminal threats and his vehicle towed. The sulfur left at both locations was determined to be non-hazardous and were properly disposed of.

Merced Police are asking anyone with any information regarding this crime to contact Officer Arias at (209) 769-3013. The public can send information via anonymous text messages to police department by dialing “TIP411” (847411) and including the word “Comvip” as the “keyword” in the text message.
