MAN ARRESTED FOR STEALING CAR, ATWATER WALMART

On April 4th, 2018 at approximately 9:40 PM, Atwater Police responded to the Walmart parking lot at 800 Commerce Avenue to a report of a subject attempting to break into a vehicle. Officer Tyler Davis was the first officer to arrive and he was directed by Walmart Loss Prevention staff to a black Honda backing out of a parking space that was said to be occupied by the responsible person(s).

Officer Davis initiated an investigative traffic stop on the Honda and detained the two occupants until backup officers arrived to assist. Officers learned that the license plates on the Honda did not match the VIN number. A check of the VIN number revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Los Banos, CA. A search of the vehicle revealed numerous shaved keys, a stolen driver’s license and credit cards as well as a small amount of methamphetamine. Both subjects (Identified as 26-year-old Jesus Garcia and 22-year-old Thomas King) were placed under arrest and later transported and booked into the Merced County Jail on charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Attempted Burglary, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
