Man allegedly responsible for a shooting in Merced was arrested, the victim died at the hospital

On May 11, 2020, at approximately 12:07 A.M., Merced Police Department Officers responded to the 900 block of West 19th Street for a shots fired call.

When officers arrived, they located an adult male who had been shot. The shooting victim was transported to a local hospital, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Merced Police Department Investigators were able to identify the suspect in the homicide as 33-year-old Francisco J. Alvarez, a known Norteno gang member.

On May 13, 2020, investigators tracked Alvarez to a residence in Merced County. Alvarez, who left the residence in a vehicle,  and fled from officers when a traffic stop was attempted.

After a brief vehicle pursuit, Alvarez was arrested in the area of Howard Road and Longview Avenue in Merced County. Alvarez was arrested and booked into Merced County Jail for murder and a gang enhancement.
